Congress Of South African Trade Unions (COSATU) in the Eastern Cape will be participating in the nationwide protest tomorrow, 19 June, as per the decision of the Central Executive Committee, the highest decision-making structure between the National Congresses.
The action by COSATU is against the deepening cost of living crisis facing poverty-stricken working-class communities. The ever-rising cost of living is worsening the already existing triple crisis which constitutes unemployment, poverty and inequality. Unemployment is a ticking time bomb ready to explode at any moment. Workers are struggling to make ends meet while they are producing the wealth of the country. They are the ones who turn the wheel of the economy. South Africa is the most unequal society in the world. The gap is widening with every year that passes.
Austerity measures are failing the majority which is mostly poor and benefits the few – the rich. Oscar Wilde remarked that recommending thrift to the poor is like advising a starving man to eat less. He found this repulsive and insulting. This is the situation we find ourselves in owing to the neoliberal austerity measures.
We are calling on the Alliance partners, progressive formations and the broader society to join us and make their voices heard against what affects workers and the communities they are drawn from adversely.
