Appointment of next Western Cape top cop not yet finalised – Cachalia

Acting police minister says June 30 is a normal business day

March and March seeks approval for an anti-illegal immigration march in Hillbrow on June 30th

Cachalia said the appointment process is primarily the responsibility of the National Police Commissioner and the Western Cape Premier, who must agree on a successor.

He said the minister only becomes involved if the two parties are unable to see eye to eye.

“And in this event, whatever decision is made is going to need the concurrence of the Premier of the province. That’s how the Constitution is structured. As police ministers, we have a very residual role when it comes to the appointment of provincial commissioners. The National Commissioner and the Premier must agree.”

Cachalia thanked Patekile for his service and contribution to the fight against crime in the Western Cape.

“So, I want to express my appreciation for his years of service, and we wish him well on his future endeavours.”
