Bentley Systems has announced a partnership with the Western Cape Government Department of Infrastructure to deploy its Blyncsy technology on sections of the provincial road network. The system will monitor about 5,000 km of roadway using computer vision to identify infrastructure issues.
The department is adopting the technology as it works to manage road assets under budget constraints and increasing weather-related risks. Recent flooding that cut off access to some towns increased the focus on road condition monitoring and maintenance planning.
Blyncsy, part of Bentley’s Asset Analytics portfolio, uses crowdsourced dash camera imagery and machine learning to identify damaged guardrails, missing street signs, faulty streetlights and debris. The system can also track vegetation encroachment, which affects road visibility and can contribute to obstructions during storms.
The initiative supports the Roads4U campaign and the Western Cape Infrastructure Framework 2050, which emphasize innovation and partnerships in transportation planning. By automating parts of the inspection process, the department aims to identify issues such as potholes and blocked drainage earlier and address them before more extensive repairs are needed.
