WEATHER: Heavy rain, storms and snow to batter SA

Here’s the weather outlook for South Africa’s nine provinces.

The South African Weather Service has issued advisories warning that an intense cut-off low will bring heavy rainfall, strong interior and gale-force coastal winds, damaging waves, storm surge, and possible disruptive snow expected this week.

SEVERE WEATHER ALERTS

IMPACT-BASED WARNINGS

A. Orange Level 6 Warning: Severe Thunderstorms accompanied by strong damaging winds, hail and heavy downpours resulting in flooding of roads and settlements as well as damage to infrastructure, are expected over the north- eastern and south-eastern parts of KwaZulu Natal.

B. An Orange Level 6 Warning: Disruptive Rain leading to flooding of settlements/property, roads, danger to life with some communities temporarily cut off is expected in places along the coast between Tsitsikamma and Kei Mouth persisting into Thursday (05-07/05/2026).

C. Yellow Level 4 Warning: Severe Thunderstorms accompanied by strong damaging winds, hail and heavy downpours resulting in flooding of roads and settlements as well as damage to infrastructure are expected over most parts of KwaZulu Natal.

D. Yellow Level 4 Warning: Disruptive Rain resulting in disruption to essential services and localised flooding can be expected over the Central Karoo and eastern parts of the Garden Route of the Western Cape.

E. Yellow level 2 Warning: Severe Thunderstorms leading to localised flooding of susceptible roads, low-lying areas and bridges, as well as localised damage to damage to settlements over an open area are expected over the eastern and central parts of North West, the eastern and central parts of Free State, interior of the and eastern parts of the coast of the Eastern Cape, Gauteng, southern and central parts of Mpumalanga as well as the Western Bushveld of Limpopo.

F. Yellow Level 2 Warning for Disruptive Snowfall leading to icy and slippery roads, can be expected over the Karoo Hoogland of the Northern Cape and Beaufort West municipalities of the Western Cape persisting into Wednesday (05-06/05/2026).

IMPACT-BASED WARNINGS FOR WEDNESDAY – THURSDAY (06-07/05/2025)

A. Orange Level 8 Warning: Disruptive Rain leading to widespread displacement of affected communities can be expected over the eastern parts of the Garden Route of the Western Cape on Wednesday into Thursday (06-07/05/2026).

B. Orange Level 6 Warning: Disruptive rain leading to flooding of roads and settlements can be expected over the Central Karoo, Kannaland and Hessequa municipalities of the Western Cape on Wednesday into Thursday (06-07/05/2026).

C. Orange Level 6 Warning: Damaging Winds and Waves leading to damage to coastal infrastructure can be expected between Cape Agulhas and Plettenberg Bay of the Western Cape on Wednesday and Thursday (06-07/05/2026).

D. Yellow Level 4 Warning: Damaging Winds leading to some structural damage, can be expected over the Central Karoo, Garden Route of the Western Cape and Karoo Hoogland of the Northern Cape on Wednesday (06/05/2026)

E. Yellow Level 4 Warning: Damaging Wind and Waves resulting in disruption of small harbours and ports, can be expected between Cape Point and Cape Agulhas of the Western Cape on Wednesday and Thursday (06-07/05/2026).

F. Yellow Level 2 Warning: Disruptive Rain leading to difficult driving conditions on dirt roads, can be expected over central interior of the Western Cape and the western interior and along the coast of Eastern Cape Wednesday into Thursday (06-07/05/2026).

G. Yellow level 2 Warning for Disruptive snow leading to loss of livestock and traffic disruptions is expected over the high-lying areas of northern and central parts of the Eastern Cape on Wednesday and Thursday (06-07/05/2026)

FIRE DANGER WARNINGS

ADVISORIES

An intense cut off low is expected to affect the western and central parts of the country from Tuesday to Thursday (05-07/05/2025). The public and all small stock farmers are advised that the combination of snow, gale force winds, heavy rain, flooding, very cold conditions and very rough seas can be expected over the Eastern Cape, southern parts of Northern Cape as well as central and north-eastern parts of the Western Cape.

Gauteng

Gauteng can expect cloudy and cool with widespread showers and thundershowers.

The expected UVB Sunburn Index is High

Mpumalanga

Mpumalanga, the Place of the Rising Sun, can expect partly cloudy with isolated showers and thundershowers in the Lowveld, where it will be how in places otherwise cloudy and warm with scattered to widespread showers and thundershowers.

Limpopo

In Limpopo, partly cloudy and hot with isolated showers and thundershowers over the Lowveld, otherwise cloudy and warm with scattered showers and thundershowers.

North West

North West, known as Bokone Bophirima in Setswana, can expect partly cloudy and cool, becoming cloudy with widespread showers and thundershowers.

Free State

In the Free State, cloudy and cool, with widespread showers and thundershowers but scattered in the extreme west.

Northern Cape

Cloudy and cold to cool, with isolated showers and thundershowers but scattered in the east and central. Light snowfalls are expected over the southern high ground in the evening. The wind along the coast will be moderate to fresh northerly to north-westerly, becoming light and variable in the evening.

Western Cape

Cloudy and cool, but cold in the east with isolated showers and rain in the west from morning, spreading over the province during the afternoon. Scattered showers and rain are expected in the east while light snowfalls are possible over the Nuweveld mountains from evening. The wind along the coast will be moderate to fresh northerly to north-westerly, but moderate westerly to south-westerly along the south coast.

Eastern Cape

The Western half: Cool in places along the coast, otherwise cloudy and cold with widespread showers and thundershowers. Snowfall can be expected in north-western escarpment in the evening.The wind along the coast will be moderate to fresh south- westerly, becoming strong to gale force south-easterly in the afternoon.

The Eastern half: Cloudy and cold with scattered showers and thundershowers. The wind along the coast will be light to moderate southerly, becoming strong to gale force south-easterly in the afternoon.

KwaZulu-Natal

Partly cloudy at first otherwise becoming cloudy and cool to warm with widespread showers and thundershowers. The wind along the coast will be moderate to fresh north- westerly in the extreme north in the morning, otherwise moderate to fresh southerly to south-westerly, becoming easterly to south-easterly from the south in the afternoon.
