Three killed in horror N1 head-on collision in Ha Phasa, Limpopo

Three people, including a victim allegedly found with a police appointment card, have died in a head-on collision involving a white Hyundai i20 and a Toyota Corolla Sprinter on the N1 near Ha Phasa on Friday evening.

Limpopo police said preliminary reports indicate officers received information about a serious motor vehicle accident on the N1 at about 6.50pm and immediately rushed to the scene.

Provincial police spokesperson Colonel Malesela Ledwaba said officers found two severely damaged vehicles involved in a head-on collision.

“The first vehicle, a white Hyundai i20, was allegedly travelling from south to north when it collided with a Toyota Corolla Sprinter travelling in the opposite direction from north to south.”

He said police discovered one deceased occupant inside the Hyundai i20.

“The victim, who was alone in the vehicle, was certified dead at the scene by emergency medical personnel.”

Ledwaba said preliminary investigations revealed the deceased was reportedly found in possession of a police appointment card.

“Inside the Toyota Corolla Sprinter, rescuers found two occupants, a male and a female, trapped inside the wreckage. Emergency rescue teams used the jaws of life to extricate the victims from the vehicle.”

He said both occupants were certified dead at the scene.

Ledwaba said three people died in the crash, but their identities have not yet been confirmed pending further investigations.

Police in Botlokwa under the Capricorn District have opened a case of culpable homicide following the collision.

“The cause of the accident is still under investigation,” he added.

Meanwhile, Limpopo Department of Transport and Community Safety said preliminary investigations indicate the possible cause of the accident was unsafe overtaking.

The department extended condolences to the bereaved families.

“Motorists are reminded to obey the rules of the road, avoid reckless overtaking, and drive with caution at all times,” acting departmental spokesperson, Matome Taueatsoala added.
