The Swellendam station commander has been suspended over alleged links to the Western Cape taxi industry.
Police confirmed that he was suspended earlier this month.
Last week, chairperson of Parliament’s Police Portfolio Committee, Ian Cameron revealed several police officers are moonlighting in the taxi industry.
“Stations like Laingsburg, Swellendam, Lingelethu West, Stellenbosch, Pinelands, Hermanus, Milnerton, Mbekweni, Calitzdorp. Provincial Vehicle Crime Investigation Unit, Samora Mchel detectives and the Anti-Gang Unit all have stakes in the taxi industry,” said Cameron.
Cameron added that he raised the matter with the Western Cape police commissioner but has received no response.
“It’s now two months later, after five follow ups- we still don’t have response because of delays in the Western Cape Provincial SAPS management. And from what we’ve seen, the provincial SAPS office has obviously not treated it with necessary urgency,” Cameron.
