  • The PA has a new councillor in the Dawid Kruiper Municipality in the Northern Cape.
  • It took the ward off the DA during a by-election on Wednesday.
  • Election analyst Wayne Sussman says this shows the party’s star is rising ahead of the upcoming polls.

The Patriotic Alliance (PA) won a ward off the DA during a by-election in the Dawid Kruiper Municipality in the Northern Cape on Wednesday.

Election analyst Wayne Sussman told News24 that the victory was “historic” because the PA had received only 63 votes across the 17 wards in the ZF Mgcawu district, including Upington, in 2021.

On Wednesday, the party won with 37.53% (1 115 votes). The ANC was in second place with 31.61% (939 votes), and the DA placed third with 28.88% (858 votes).

Voter turnout was 63.01%.

The new PA councillor is Christi-Ann Ntlanganiso.

Sussman said the party would be “delighted” with the win over its rivals, the DA.

He told New24 that the win showed the party’s star was rising in the province, and that the PA would be a “big factor” in the Northern Cape in the upcoming local government elections.

In other by-election results, the ANC retained its seat in the Matlosana Municipality in the North West province. The party won 81.03% of the total votes cast. In the Siyathemba Municipality in the Northern Cape, the ANC won a seat off the Siyathemba Community Movement with 50.77% of the vote.

This is the second time in weeks that the PA has won a ward off the DA. In April, the party won a ward in Stellenbosch. News24 reported that the ward councillor had resigned from the DA, joined the PA and then stood again as a ward candidate. She won the ward with 39.48% of the votes cast.

PA national spokesperson Steve Motale told News24 that Wednesday’s win was “significant”.

“This by-election result is therefore significant because it represents a breakthrough for the PA in the municipality and reflects growing support for the party in the Upington region and broader Northern Cape,” he said.

“The result suggests that the PA’s message is increasingly resonating with communities that feel overlooked by traditional political structures, and that the party is successfully converting grassroots support into electoral victories at the local level.”
