Limpopo police launch manhunt after 22-month-old toddler raped in Vhembe District

The South African Police Service (SAPS) has launched an intensive investigation following the sexual assault of a 22-month-old girl in Maphophe Village.

The incident, which has sparked widespread community outrage, was reported on Wednesday, May 6, under the Saselamani policing area.

This assault occurred shortly after the national launch of Child Protection Month, an initiative designed to raise awareness of children’s rights and safety. The incident highlights the ongoing challenges regarding gender-based violence and child safety in the region.

The provincial police spokesperson, Colonel Malesela Ledwaba, said the child’s mother woke up on Wednesday morning and noticed her child was unable to stand.

“Upon further examination, she observed that the victim’s left knee was swollen. The mother immediately transported the child to a local hospital, where medical personnel confirmed that the toddler had been sexually assaulted,” Ledwaba said.

A case of rape was subsequently opened at Saselamani Police Station and has since been transferred to the Giyani Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences (FCS) Unit for specialised investigation. Police have confirmed that the suspect is unknown at this stage.

The Limpopo Police Commissioner, Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe, described the incident as deeply disturbing and immoral.

“This is a shocking and heartbreaking crime. A baby of 22 months old cannot speak for herself, and it is our duty to speak for her through action. Child Protection Month was launched to remind us all that children must be kept safe, and yet here we are,” Hadebe said.

The Commissioner further sent out a stern warning.

“I want to send a clear message: we will find the person responsible, and we will ensure that justice is served. I am calling on anyone in that community who knows something to please come forward. Do it for that little girl,” Hadebe said.

Anyone with information is urged to contact the investigating officer, Constable Collen Netile at 072 735 3572, their nearest police station, or call the SAPS CrimeStop number at 08600 10111. Callers may also send a tip-off via the MySAPSApp. All informants have the right to remain anonymous.
