Kenya and Nigeria demand protection for nationals in South Africa

The governments of Kenya and Nigeria have expressed concern for their respective nationals following a recent spate of protests against undocumented migrants in the country.

Demonstrators who marched in KwaZulu-Natal, the Eastern Cape and Gauteng are calling for tougher immigration controls, including stricter visa regulations and a review of asylum policies.

Some foreign nationals have expressed anger over the marches, with some labelling the highlighted issues misleading and rage-baiting.

The Nigerian government has accused the South African government of not doing enough to clamp down on what they have labelled as threats and harassment experienced by migrants in the country.

As a result, officials in Abuja said they are organising emergency repatriation flights for at least 130 citizens.

Nigerian authorities said their nationals – documented and undocumented – who reside in South Africa have cited security concerns as reasons for returning to their home country.

The Nigerian Foreign Ministry has also called for impartial investigations into the deaths of at least two Nigerians who allegedly died in two separate incidents involving South African security personnel last month.

The Kenyan government has also advised its citizens to carry valid identification and relevant documentation.

It further suggested that they reach out to the police and approach the High Commission in Pretoria for appropriate assistance.
