Grade 4 Redhill learner Benjamin Jones has achieved an impressive milestone after being selected to represent Gauteng in the U12 ice hockey team and the U14 invitational team at the upcoming IPT tournament in June.

His journey into ice hockey began after attending a Washington Capitals game in Washington DC, where he was inspired by the speed and intensity of the sport.
“I especially liked watching Alexander Ovechkin. After we came home, I started ice skating lessons to prepare for ice hockey.”

He spent a full year developing his skating skills before stepping fully into the game.

Benjamin said one of the things he enjoys most about ice hockey is the physical challenge it brings. “I like that you need to be strong, athletic, and fast.”

Training for the sport requires discipline, particularly because ice hockey matches and practices in South Africa are often scheduled at unusual hours. “Sometimes practices are late at night, and matches can start at 05:00. So, I train a lot and make sure I get enough sleep.”

Among his achievements, Benjamin said being awarded Most Valuable Player in his first U14 match remains one of his proudest moments. He also credits his father for being his biggest supporter throughout his journey.
