Western Cape-based anti-GBV organisation Ilitha Labantu says it is appalled that much-needed resources are being kept in storage instead of being distributed to Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences (FCS) units.
The Police Portfolio Committee chairperson, Ian Cameron, visited the Nyanga and Stellenbosch units last week and discovered a shortage of rape kits.
Ilitha Labantu spokesperson Siya Monakali says the kits must be properly delivered to the facilities where they are needed most.
“If it can take less than 24 hours for them to get up and go take these rape kits, who now needs to be held accountable? It means that there is a lack of willingness from whoever is in charge of disbursing these rape kits,” Monakali said.
