ANC Gauteng leadership shakeup: Lesufi named provincial convenor

The African National Congress (ANC) has reshuffled its Gauteng leadership.

This, after the party withdrew veteran Amos Masondo as the provincial convenor and replaced him with Premier Panyaza Lesufi.

Lesufi had been serving as co-convenor after the ANC’s national executive committee (NEC) reconfigured the Gauteng provincial executive committee (PEC) last year, after the party’s poor performance in the 2024 elections.

The ANC was forced into a coalition government in Gauteng, which now includes the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF).

Masondo now joins the provincial task team as an additional member, while former Gauteng legislature speaker Ntombi Mekgwe has been removed as deputy provincial convenor and replaced by Sochayile Khanyile.

ANC national spokesperson Mahlengi Bhengu briefed journalists after the leadership changes were announced at Luthuli House on Thursday.

“They have been given marching orders, including going to the ground, interacting with our counsellors, multiplying high-impact service delivery initiatives, such as what we are seeing as we are cleaning Johannesburg, and we’ve urged them to learn from those best lessons.”
