Young fighters shine at Western Cape karate championships

Martial arts students from across the city took part in last weekend’s annual Kyokushin Karate Western Cape Championship, held at Wynberg Military Base.

The event was hosted by Honbu Dojo in Cape Town, led by renowned karate legend Shihan Kenny Uytenbogaardt. Among the standout performers were Jared Cyster and Max Romeo, who competed in the boys’ 8-year full-contact division. Cyster, a learner at Wynberg Boys’ Junior School, secured a bronze medal. Kyokushin is a knockdown style of karate, meaning competitors in full-contact divisions do not pull their punches or kicks.

Alexander McArthur, also from Wynberg Boys’, earned a gold medal in the boys’ 12-year full-contact division. Mason Crowster, a learner at Sweet Valley Primary, competed in the boys’ 11-year full-contact division and brought home a bronze medal.

Jamie Lane and Yunus Hoosain competed in the boys’ 15–17 and 12–14 full-contact divisions, respectively, earning a silver and a gold medal.

The girls also delivered strong performances. Sage Romeo, from Sweet Valley Primary, battled her way to gold in the girls’ 10-year full-contact division, while Kauthar Hoosain won gold in the girls’ 9-year division.

In the senior divisions, Peter Davids fought an explosive bout to secure silver in the men’s middleweight division, while Hannah Bleekers earned bronze in the women’s lightweight division.

Kyokushin karate is a popular, internationally recognised style. Training is available at the Kyokushin Karate dojo on Bree Street in the Cape Town CBD, and at First Meadowridge Scout Hall. Beginners are welcome. For more information, contact 072 324 5629.
