Today’s weather: Rain, hail and thunderstorm loom across interior, Western Cape faces heatwave

South Africans can expect a mixed bag of weather on Wednesday, as clouds, scattered thunderstorms, and pockets of heat shape conditions across the country, according to the South African Weather Service.

A broad band of moisture will bring isolated to scattered showers and thundershowers over much of the interior.

Rain chances sit at around 30% across provinces such as Gauteng, Limpopo, Mpumalanga, and the North West, where conditions will remain cloudy and cool to warm. Morning fog is likely along the escarpment in Mpumalanga and parts of KwaZulu-Natal, reducing visibility early in the day.

Further south, the Free State will also see cloudy and cool weather, but with a higher likelihood of rainfall in the western parts where scattered storms push rain chances closer to 60%.

The central interior, particularly parts of the Northern Cape, will experience similar conditions with scattered thundershowers and a moderate risk of severe storms.

South African Weather Services has issued a Yellow Level 2 warning for severe thunderstorms over portions of the Northern Cape interior, where storms may produce strong damaging winds, hail, intense lightning, and heavy downpours. These conditions could lead to localised flooding and damage to infrastructure, vehicles, and livestock.

In contrast, the Western Cape will remain largely dry along the south coast, with fine and warm to hot conditions dominating.

However, the west coast will turn very hot, accompanied by extremely high fire danger conditions in areas such as Swartland, Bergrivier, Drakenstein, and Beaufort West. Only isolated showers are expected in the northern parts of the province, with rain chances around 30%.

Along the south and east, the Eastern Cape will start with morning fog in places before turning partly cloudy. Isolated to scattered showers are expected inland, especially in the western half, while coastal areas remain mostly fine. Rain chances vary between 30 and 60% depending on location.

In KwaZulu-Natal, cloudy to partly cloudy skies will prevail with isolated showers, mainly in the west and north. Rainfall probabilities remain around 30%, while coastal winds will be moderate to fresh from the north-east. Fog is also expected over the interior during the morning and evening.

Overall, Wednesday will be marked by unsettled conditions across the interior with pockets of potentially severe weather, while the Western Cape continues to experience heat and elevated fire risk.
