Two suspected robbers were shot dead after allegedly opening fire on police during a dramatic high-speed chase in Sebokeng, Gauteng.
The confrontation escalated into a tense shootout that ended with the suspects’ vehicle capsizing, with explosives later recovered at the scene.
Police said the incident unfolded when members of Gauteng’s Tactical Response Team were patrolling along Houtkop Road and spotted a suspicious vehicle.
Officers quickly established that the car had allegedly been hijacked and was fitted with false registration plates, prompting them to move in.
“Two suspected robbers were fatally wounded following the shootout,” the South African Police Service (SAPS) said.
Officers activated their sirens and attempted to stop the vehicle, but the driver allegedly sped off.
A high-speed chase ensued, with gunfire reportedly erupting as the suspects allegedly fired at pursuing officers.
Police returned fire while maintaining the pursuit, with the situation escalating when the fleeing vehicle lost control and overturned.
One of the suspects reportedly scrambled from the wreck and attempted to flee, but collapsed just metres away. Both men were declared dead at the scene by paramedics.
The drama did not end there. Officers searching the vehicle allegedly made a startling discovery, recovering a firearm as well as explosives believed to have been inside the car.
The items have since been seized for forensic examination.
“Police seized a firearm from the suspects, as well as explosives found inside the vehicle, for further investigation. The vehicle was confirmed to have been stolen and linked to a Carletonville case reported in January 2026.”
