South Hills Boxing Club hosts successful Gauteng Development Tournament | Comaro Chronicle

South Hills Boxing Club proudly hosted a successful Gauteng Development Tournament on April 18. They brought together talented young fighters from across the province for a day of competitive and inspiring boxing.

The event featured an impressive 28 bouts, showcasing the growing strength of grassroots boxing in Gauteng.

Of the 28 fights, 10 featured South Hills boxers, who demonstrated exceptional determination, discipline, and courage in the ring. Regardless of the outcomes, each athlete embodied the true spirit of boxing – resilience, growth, and sportsmanship – making their club and community proud.

Club goes beyond boxing
Beyond the ring, South Hills Boxing Club continues to stand as a beacon of hope for the South Hills community and surrounding areas.

As a registered NPC (Non-Profit Company – 2023/612254/08), the club plays a vital role in youth development, offering structured boxing training, life skills development, feeding schemes, and a Christian youth programme known as ‘Switch’. These initiatives aim to uplift young people, keep them engaged in positive activities, and provide guidance for a brighter future.

In addition, the club has partnered with the South African Council for Applied Psychology (SACAP) to offer free counselling services, ensuring that athletes and community members have access to much-needed mental health support.

Currently, South Hills Boxing Club has 26 registered competitive boxers and trains approximately 50 individuals weekly, reflecting its rapid growth and impact.

However, with this growth comes challenges. The club is in urgent need of reliable transport and has launched a Buy a Bus campaign to secure a bus or minibus to safely transport athletes to training sessions and competitions.

The club is calling on corporate partners and sponsors to assist in this initiative and invest in the future of these young athletes and the wider community. Coach Lyle Fortoen expressed his gratitude, saying, “A huge thank you to all our incredible boxers who stepped into the ring at the South Hills Boxing Development Tournament.

With 28 fights on the day and 10 of them featuring our very own South Hills warriors, we couldn’t be prouder of the heart, discipline, and courage shown by each and every one of you. Win or lose, it’s about growth, experience, and the fighting spirit you continue to build, and you all represented the club with pride. Keep pushing, keep improving, and stay hungry for success. The future is bright.”

As South Hills Boxing Club continues to grow, it remains committed to shaping champions not only in the ring but in life, proving that sport can be a powerful tool for change and community upliftment.
