Severe thunderstorms expected: Orange level 6 warning issued for Northern Cape, North West and Free State

It’s going to be a cold long weekend across the country.

The South African Weather Service has issued an orange level 6 warning for severe thunderstorms in the Northern Cape, the North West and the Free State for today and tomorrow (Friday).

SAWS said a significantly higher air system will drive prevailing weather conditions, resulting in widespread rainfall of 40-90mm.

“These rainfall events are expected to result in notable impacts including localized flooding and disruption to normal activities in the western parts of both the Free State and the North West. The weather pattern will continue in the north-eastern parts of the Northern Cape on Friday, May 1,” the forecaster said.

SAWS has warned that this will lead to damage to infrastructure, settlements, property, vehicles and livestock.

A yellow level 4 warning has also been issued for severe thunderstorms over parts of the country, with a yellow level 1 warning for damaging winds in northern areas of KwaZulu-Natal.

Meanwhile, a cold front is expected to move along the south-west coast of the Western Cape on Friday and Saturday.

“As a result, near gale to gale force northwesterly winds can be expected between Cape Point and Cape Agulhas from Friday morning to Saturday evening, along with high swells,” SAWS warned.
