In a significant boost to education in Komani and Erhamnyiba in the Eastern Cape of South Africa, three schools received major infrastructure upgrades through the humanitarian efforts of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. These improvements are set to enhance learning environments, address long-standing challenges and uplift the surrounding communities.

Lesseyton Primary School Handover
Lesseyton Primary School in Komani, which serves more than 600 learners, has long faced serious infrastructure challenges, including a shortage of classrooms, inadequate administrative facilities and poor sanitation. The completion of a comprehensive upgrade project has now transformed the school’s learning environment.
The project included the construction of new classrooms and administrative offices, the installation of flushing toilets, and the provision of a reliable, clean water source, laying a strong foundation for improved teaching and learning.
“We are grateful that, among many schools, our school was chosen for this refurbishment,” said a school representative, expressing appreciation for the Church’s support.
Mr. Ayanda Jasi, a former learner and current teacher at the school, echoed these sentiments, noting the visible transformation: “As a former scholar, I am grateful for the elevation that The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has given to this school. Our school now looks and feels like those in the cities.”
The handover ceremony was held on Wednesday, March 18, 2026.
Toisekraal Primary School Upgrade
Just a few kilometres away, Toisekraal Primary School, serving more than 700 learners, was also selected to benefit from the Church’s humanitarian program. The school previously faced leaking roofs, reliance on pit toilets, a lack of clean water and furniture shortages.
Through these upgrades, learners and educators now enjoy safer classrooms, improved sanitation, access to clean water and sufficient desks and chairs, creating a healthier and more conducive learning environment.
“As a school, we had needs and wishes that we hoped could one day be realized,” said Ms. Thembisa Mapenyana, principal at Toisekraal Primary School. “We faced a shortage of classrooms, lack of clean water and insufficient desks and chairs. The Church came through for us, and today, we can confidently say we have what we need.”

Proceedings continued on Thursday, March 19, 2026, at Mbulelo Benekane Senior Secondary School in Erhamnyiba Village. The school serves more than 760 learners and was challenged by overcrowded classrooms and the absence of a science laboratory.
The Church’s contribution included the construction of a fully equipped science laboratory and the provision of 180 desks and 40 chairs, significantly enhancing access to quality science education and improving the overall learning experience.
Quoting a well-known African proverb, “If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together,” Stake President Thando Funcuza echoed sentiments shared by Elder Dale G. Renlund of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles: “Today we celebrate working together to strengthen these schools for learners, teachers and the broader community. Together, we will go far.”
President Funcuza further acknowledged the global generosity behind the initiative: “We are deeply grateful for the selfless and faithful offerings of 17.5 million Church members and friends around the world whose donations make projects like these possible.”
Education Is the Key
The Church’s commitment to education is rooted in its belief that learning is essential for personal and community development.
“The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints believes that education is a vital tool for lifting individuals and communities,” said Bishop Jaxa, quoting Elder Renlund. “By expanding access to learning opportunities, we empower individuals to improve both their temporal well-being and spiritual growth.”
These efforts resonate with the words of former South African President Nelson Mandela, who once said: “Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.”
The Church continues to invite individuals and organizations to join in its mission to serve and uplift communities.
“Every act of kindness, every moment of service, and every expression of love shines as a ray of hope to those around us,” said Bishop Jaxa, further echoing Elder Renlund’s counsel.
