SAWS issues weather warnings for Eastern Cape as damaging winds, waves loom

The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has issued multiple weather warnings for parts of the Eastern Cape, cautioning residents and maritime operators to prepare for potentially hazardous conditions.

A Yellow Level 2 warning for damaging winds and waves is in effect along the coastline between East London and Port Edward. According to SAWS, strong winds could result in localised damage to settlements and temporary structures, as well as disruptions to power supply and communication networks.

The weather service further warned that coastal activities may be affected, with possible disruptions to beach outings and port operations in the affected areas.

A second Yellow Level 2 warning has been issued for damaging waves along the coast between Tsitsikamma and Port Edward. SAWS said these conditions may lead to difficulty in navigating small boats, with a risk of vessels taking on water or capsizing in certain areas.

Meanwhile, a Yellow Level 1 warning for damaging winds and waves has been issued for coastal regions stretching from Port Edward to Kosi Bay. These conditions are expected to cause temporary disruptions to small harbours and ports, while also posing risks to small vessels at sea.

In addition to the coastal warnings, SAWS noted that very cold conditions are expected over the northern interior of the Eastern Cape.
