Police are investigating the vigilante murder of a Free State man burned with a tire

Police have launched a murder investigation after a 27-year-old man was found burned beyond recognition in Thubelisha, Thabong, in what authorities say is a case of vigilante violence.

Police spokesperson Sergeant Palesa Thabana said officers were alerted to the discovery of a body in an open space in the area at around 9.30am on Tuesday morning.

“Police responded and upon arrival they found an African man wearing red sweatpants. He was shackled with a burnt tire and had tire debris strewn about his body,” Thabana said.

Preliminary investigations indicate that the victim was allegedly attacked and set on fire by a group of community members.

No arrests have been made.

“A case of murder has been registered and investigations are underway. The motive for the murder is unclear at this stage,” Thabana confirmed.

Authorities strongly condemned the incident and warned against acts of waywardness.

“The public is sternly warned that the violent acts of vigilantism directly violate the constitutional rights of citizens and undermine the rule of law,” Thabana said.

“Communities are urged to report crimes rather than take the law into their own hands.”

Police have asked the public for help in finding those responsible.

“Police urge anyone with information that could lead to the arrest of perpetrators of this violent crime to come forward,” Thabana said.

Anyone with information can contact Sunrise View police or submit an anonymous tip via the MySAPS app.

Investigations are underway.
