Limpopo police are investigating a case of murder and attempted murder following the fatal stabbing of a pensioner at a shebeen.Â
According to South African Police Service (SAPS) spokesperson Colonel Malesela Ledwaba, the incident occurred in the early hours of Thursday morning at a local shebeen, where a 79-year-old man was killed and 52-year-old suspect sustained injuries.
“It is alleged that the deceased and the suspect were reportedly involved in a dispute, believed to be related to a romantic affair with the owner of the premises,” he said.
Police said the victim and the suspect had been drinking sorghum beer with a group of people before an altercation broke out outside the premises.
Bystanders reportedly heard a disturbance and, upon investigating, found the two men fighting, with the elderly man stabbed and the suspect injured.
Emergency Medical Services declared the victim dead at the scene, where a sharp object believed to have been used in the attack was also recovered.
“The suspect, who was arrested at the scene, is currently receiving medical attention at a hospital for a chest injury and is expected to face a charge of murder and attempted murder.”
The suspect is expected to appear in the Thohoyandou Magistrate’s Court soon. Police investigations are ongoing.
