Limpopo football stakeholders slam corruption, poor leadership | Review

POLOKWANE – Football stakeholders from across Capricorn met at old Peter Mokaba Stadium on March 25 for a press briefing focused on the ongoing challenges facing the game in Limpopo.

The session was led by former Safa Capricorn president and current Magesi Football Club spokesperson, Abel Rakoma.

It brought together club owners, league organisers and Safa officials, creating space for open discussion and fresh ideas on improving the state of football in the province.

A major talking point was alleged corruption involving certain provincial Safa national executive committee members.

Attendees said this continues to slow down progress and limit development opportunities for local teams and players.

“No teams received funding late under my watch” – Rakoma

Reflecting on his time in office, Rakoma admitted there were challenges but he insisted football was run fairly under his leadership. He said teams received funding and playing kits on time, something he believes is no longer happening consistently.

“Yes, I am bitter because during my time, things were not happening the way they are now. When I was president, no teams received their funding and playing kits late,” he said.

He added that in recent years, many club chairpersons have had to dig into their own pockets to keep teams running.

Rakoma also pointed to teams like Moria Sweepers, Lebash Football Academy and The Dolphins, saying they should be competing at higher levels.

According to him, poor leadership has contributed to their current situations.

The media also came under scrutiny, with Rakoma criticising what he sees as limited coverage of football development, with more attention given to local tournaments.

Former Banyana star laments lack of recognition

Former Banyana Banyana player Rachel Sebati supported this view, highlighting a lack of recognition for former players.

“We need more coverage to help build and promote talented players,” she said.

The session ended on a constructive note, with stakeholders sharing proposals and committing to improving football governance and development in the province.
