Phakamisa Taitai has risen from a security guard to a Trainee Regional Manager overseeing 12 Usave stores in Gauteng, showcasing a powerful story of resilience, hard work and career growth.
In a powerful testament to perseverance and ambition, Phakamisa Taitai has transformed his life from humble beginnings as a security guard into a leadership role overseeing 12 Usave stores in Gauteng.
His journey is not only a personal triumph but also a reflection of what determination, opportunity, and continuous learning can achieve.
Twenty years ago, Taitai stood at the entrance of retail stores, ensuring safety and order.
Today, he walks through those same aisles with authority and purpose as a Trainee Regional Manager, responsible for the performance and operations of multiple stores.
His story is one of grit, marked by small, intentional steps that ultimately led to significant growth.
Originally from Sterkspruit in the Eastern Cape, Taitai relocated to Gauteng in 2006 in search of better opportunities.
Like many South Africans chasing a brighter future, his journey was not easy.

He spent a full year unemployed before finally securing a position as a security guard through a private company.
His role placed him in several Shoprite Group stores, including the busy Golden Walk branch in Germiston.
Rather than limiting himself to his position’s duties, Taitai took the initiative.
He began assisting with stock counting and packing, quietly absorbing the inner workings of the retail environment.
His willingness to go beyond his job description did not go unnoticed.
In 2009, a branch manager recognised his potential and offered him a position as a receiving clerk, a pivotal moment that would change the course of his career.
“It was not easy. You had to plan carefully, manage suppliers and make sure everything ran smoothly. But it taught me discipline and how to think ahead,” Taitai reflected.
From that point on, his career trajectory steadily climbed.
With each new role, Taitai gained a deeper understanding of the business, from stockroom logistics to customer-facing operations.
Internal training programmes and mentorship within the Shoprite Group further sharpened his leadership skills and boosted his confidence.
In October 2025, his years of dedication culminated in a major promotion to Trainee Regional Manager within Usave’s Northern Division.
Now responsible for 12 stores across Gauteng, Taitai faces the challenge of maintaining profitability and operational excellence in a tough economic climate.
“I have to ensure that no store runs at a loss, even in a difficult economy. It is a big step from managing one store to overseeing many, but I am learning every day,” he explained.
At the core of his leadership philosophy is fairness and recognition.

Taitai believes that when employees feel valued, they are more motivated to excel.
“You must treat people equally and acknowledge when someone has done well. When people feel recognised, they push themselves to do even better,” he said.
Beyond the workplace, Taitai is a devoted husband and father of four.
His family remains a central source of motivation, driving him to keep pushing forward despite challenges.
