Free State boy dies during school rugby match

SASOLBURG – The Free State Ministry of Education has announced that a student has died during a sports competition.

Nhlakanipho Buthelezi (15) was playing a rugby match for his school, HTS Sasolburg. The incident took place during the U/15 match against Sasolburg High School at the DP de Villiers Stadium, Sasolburg.

Free State Education MEC Dr. Mantlhake Maboya said they are shocked and saddened by the sudden death of young Nhlakanipho.

“We are deeply shocked by the tragic loss of Nhlakanipho Buthelezi, a young life cut short. Our thoughts go out to his family, friends and the HTS Sasolburg community. We extend our condolences and support at this difficult time.”

The scrum half was busy playing when he developed severe breathing difficulties and was rushed to Sasolburg Hospital where he was pronounced deceased.

“We will support the school and the family in every way we can and appreciate the quick response of the medical staff.

“Nhlakanipho’s passing reminds us of the fragility of life. We join his loved ones and the school community in mourning this loss,” she said.

The FNB Classic Clash between HTS Sasolburg and Sasolburg High School is an annual event that has been taking place for approximately 47 years.
