Three people were killed in a head-on collision between a minibus taxi and a sedan on the N2 between eMkhondo and Ermelo on Monday, the Mpumalanga Department of Community Safety, Security and Liaison said.
The crash occurred at about 11am on Monday.
“All the victims were occupants of the minibus taxi and were declared dead at the scene. Five other occupants from the minibus taxi escaped with minor injuries,” departmental spokesperson Moeti Mmusi.
Mmusi said the N2 was temporarily closed following the crash, which is under investigation.
In a separate incident, one person was killed when a minibus taxi overturned on the R568 near Kameelpoort Bridge between Vaalbank and KwaMhlanga at about 9:40 a.m. on Monday.
Five people sustained serious injuries and 10 others escaped with slight injuries.
“The minibus taxi was reportedly travelling from Zebediela in Limpopo Province en route to Pretoria.”
The injured were transported to nearby hospitals for treatment.
Meanwhile, MEC for Community Safety, Security and Liaison Jackie Macie conveyed condolences to the affected families and wished those injured a speedy recovery.
“We are reiterating our call to motorists driving long distances to rest sufficiently along the way because fatigue kills.”
”They must obey the rules and refrain from excessive speeding and dangerous overtaking,” he said .
