- 1.5 GW hybrid project combining wind, solar PV and battery storage.
- Financial close targeted for 2027 as grid infrastructure investment accelerates.
Dimsum Energy and Goldwind Africa have formalised a partnership to develop a large scale renewable energy pipeline in South Africa’s Eastern Cape, anchored by a R40bn (about US$2.1bn) green energy cluster integrating wind, solar and battery storage.
The project is designed to deliver a diversified generation mix to improve supply reliability. Planned capacity includes 700 MW of wind, 800 MW of solar PV and a battery energy storage system ranging between 400 MW and 500 MW with a four hour duration.
The partners are targeting financial close in 2027, aligning the development with South Africa’s broader push to expand clean energy capacity and stabilise the grid.
The initiative reflects a growing shift in the Eastern Cape’s energy profile. Historically under-represented
in power generation, the province is increasingly attracting investment due to strong coastal and inland wind resources, positioning it as a future wind energy hub.
Grid readiness remains a key enabler. Supporting infrastructure investment is already underway, including a R1bn substation project led by Earth & Wire to strengthen grid access and accommodate new capacity.
Under the partnership, Dimsum Energy will lead project development and origination, focusing on long term sustainability outcomes. Goldwind Africa will serve as the technology partner, supplying wind turbine solutions and technical expertise tailored to local wind conditions to optimise performance and generation efficiency.
