Deadly N1 Limpopo crash leaves five dead, two critically injured

Five people have died and two others were seriously injured in a head-on collision involving three vehicles on the N1 in Limpopo on Wednesday morning.

The Limpopo Department of Transport and Community Safety confirmed the crash occurred at about 7.45am near Boekenhout in the Waterberg District.

According to the department, the accident involved a Renault light motor vehicle, a Ford light delivery vehicle and a Toyota light delivery vehicle.

Preliminary information indicates that the Renault made a U-turn on the freeway, resulting in a head-on collision with the other two vehicles.

Two male drivers and three occupants from one of the vehicles were killed in the crash.

Two passengers sustained serious injuries and were transported to FH Odendaal Hospital for treatment.

Limpopo MEC for Transport and Community Safety, Violet Mathye, expressed shock at the incident and extended condolences to the victims’ families.

“We are deeply saddened by the loss of lives in this tragic accident. Our thoughts are with the families and loved ones of those who have passed away,” Mathye said.

Authorities suspect reckless and possibly drunk driving may have contributed to the crash.

“The possible cause of the accident is reckless driving, potentially due to a drunken driver. We urge all road users to take responsibility for their safety and the safety of others,” said Mathye.

The department has reiterated calls for motorists to exercise caution and adhere to road safety regulations as investigations into the crash continue.
