Wednesday weather: Severe thunderstorms to hit Eastern Cape as widespread rain sweeps across SA

A dynamic and potentially hazardous weather setup is expected across large parts of South Africa this Wednesday, as unstable atmospheric conditions trigger widespread showers and severe thunderstorms.

The South African Weather Service has issued a Yellow Level 2 warning for severe thunderstorms, particularly affecting the central and eastern interior as well as parts of the Eastern Cape.

These storms are likely to bring intense downpours, frequent lightning, gusty winds, and the risk of localised flooding, especially in low-lying and poorly drained areas.

Rain chances will be highest over the central interior, where widespread rainfall is expected with an 80% chance of storms developing, particularly from the Northern Cape into the Free State.

Surrounding regions, including much of the eastern interior, will see scattered to widespread thunderstorms with a 60% chance of rain.

Gauteng can expect a 60% chance of scattered thunderstorms, covering Johannesburg, Pretoria and Klerksdorp.

Along parts of the eastern coastline and northeastern areas, including regions near Mbombela and Polokwane, rain chances are lower but still notable at around 30%, with isolated thunderstorms possible.

The western parts of the country, especially the southwestern Cape, will experience significantly drier conditions with little to no rainfall expected, offering a stark contrast to the stormy interior.

Forecasters warn that the most intense storms could lead to localized damage to infrastructure, vehicles, and informal settlements. There is also a risk of power disruptions, dangerous driving conditions, and potential impacts on agriculture, including livestock and crops.

Residents in affected areas are urged to remain weather-aware throughout the day, avoid flooded roads, and seek shelter during thunderstorms. Conditions are expected to ease later Wednesday night as the system gradually moves eastward.
