The schools’ athletics season has reached a boiling point, with the upcoming Western Cape Primary Schools’ Championships set to take place at Coetzenberg this weekend. This follows weeks of cluster and interschools meetings, as well as last Saturday’s Western Province Championships at Blue Downs Stadium.
Here, athletes from the city’s various school districts — Metro North, Metro East, Metro Central and Metro South — competed for a place at the Western Cape Championships.
In a meet dominated by athletes representing schools in the northern suburbs, one of the star performers was Metro Central high jumper, Auria van Wyk, a Grade 6 pupil at Montevideo Primary School, who won the girls’under-12 competition.Â
The youngster first caught the eye two years ago, in only her first year as a competitive athlete, winning gold in the girls’ under-10 high jump event at the Western Cape and national championships in Paarl and Limpopo, respectively.
She missed out on last year’s competition after picking up a foot injury at the Western Cape championships, at Green Point Stadium. However, she bounced back later in the year, winning gold in the girls’under-11 division at last year’s national club championships, in Potchefstroom, clearing the bar with an impressive height of 1.48m
