South Africans can expect a mix of heat, scattered thunderstorms and pockets of rain on Tuesday as unstable weather conditions develop across several provinces, while parts of the Eastern Cape continue to endure an ongoing heatwave.
Several regions are expected to see showers and thunderstorms, with some storms becoming severe in the interior.
The South African Weather Service has issued a Yellow Level 2 warning for severe thunderstorms for large parts of the Northern Cape, excluding the far northern and extreme western areas, as well as the extreme northeastern parts of the Western Cape.
These storms could produce localized flooding of vulnerable roads, low lying areas and bridges, large amounts of small hail and damaging winds that may lead to localized infrastructure damage.
Another Yellow Level 2 warning is in place for the western parts of the Eastern Cape where severe thunderstorms may bring localized flooding and damage to property during the afternoon and evening.
Across Gauteng, conditions will be partly cloudy and warm with scattered showers and thunderstorms developing later in the day. Rain chances are around 60%.
Mpumalanga will see cloudy to partly cloudy skies with scattered showers and thunderstorms across most of the province and light rain in the east. Morning fog patches are expected in the central and western areas. Rain chances are around 60% over the northern parts and about 30% in the south.
Limpopo will experience cloudy skies with rain and showers in the east and scattered thunderstorms elsewhere across the province. Morning fog patches are expected in the southwest. Rain chances are near 60% in the northern parts and about 30% elsewhere.
The North West Province will be partly cloudy and warm with isolated thunderstorms, although scattered storms may develop in the far eastern areas. Rain chances are around 30%.
The Free State will also see partly cloudy and warm conditions with isolated showers and thunderstorms during the afternoon and evening. Rain chances are about 30%.
In the Northern Cape, conditions will be partly cloudy and warm with isolated showers and thunderstorms across much of the province, but scattered storms are expected in the southeast where the severe weather warning applies. Rain chances are around 30% in most areas and 60% in the southeast.
The Western Cape will be cloudy to partly cloudy and warm to hot, although cooler conditions are expected over the Cape Peninsula and parts of the Overberg.
Isolated showers and rain will occur over the south and southwestern parts, while isolated to scattered showers and thunderstorms are expected over the central, eastern and southern interior during the afternoon.
Rain chances are around 30% in the southwest and near 60% in parts of the interior. The UVB sunburn index is expected to be very high.
The western half of the Eastern Cape will be cloudy and warm along the coast with light rain in the morning and scattered showers and thunderstorms developing later inland. Temperatures inland will be hot to very hot and rain chances are around 60% in some areas.
The eastern half of the Eastern Cape will start cloudy along the coast before becoming partly cloudy and warm to hot. Isolated showers and thunderstorms are expected mainly over the northern and western areas with rain chances around 30%.
KwaZulu Natal will experience morning fog patches over the interior followed by partly cloudy and warm to hot conditions. Isolated showers and thunderstorms are expected during the day with rain chances around 30%. The UVB sunburn index will remain low.
A heatwave will continue to affect several municipalities in the Eastern Cape including parts of the Amathole, OR Tambo and Alfred Nzo districts, where persistently high temperatures are expected to continue through Tuesday and into Wednesday.
