Several talented athletes from the Smithathlons Athletics Club in Carletonville are moving on to the Gauteng provincial championships following a series of impressive performances.

The club’s coach, Annetjie Smit, praised the team’s recent success. “Our athletes did excellently at last week’s D2 championships,” she said. The team secured a haul of medals during the D2 event.

Sibusiso Ndiko won gold in the boys U17 200m and long jump, and a silver medal in the 100m. Sakhelo Fongoqo took gold in the boys U19 long jump. Mikayla Smit earned silver medals in the girls U17 100m, 200m, and high jump.

Xolani Kotoi won silver in the boys U19 hurdles. These athletes will now compete at the Gauteng Championship at Germiston Stadium on March 7 and 8.

Meanwhile, several members recently showcased their skills at the ACM (Athletics Central Northwest) B-league event in Potchefstroom on February 24. The participants included Sibusiso Ndiko, Mikayla Smit, Remmone Morubi, Tshepo Mogotsi, Jutani Blaauw, Lesego Thela, and Oyintando Mtshilana. Many of these athletes will return to Potchefstroom for another competition on March 3.

Athletes who excel at these events can qualify for the ASA (Athletics South Africa) Youth and Junior Championships. Those who do well at this national competition stand a chance to qualify for the Youth World Championship in Senegal later this year.
