Strong concern has been raised following reports of the coronation of a Nigerian “king” in East London, in South Africa’s (SA) Eastern Cape province.
The African Transformation Movement (ATM) says the move undermines the country’s legal framework and the recognised system of traditional leadership. The party argues that royal titles cannot be created or recognised outside SA’s established cultural and legal structures.
The ATM has called on authorities to urgently investigate the matter, including Oscar Mabuyane and Leon Schreiber.
Party Spokesperson Zama Ntshona says clarity is needed on the legitimacy of the coronation and whether any laws have been breached.
