The Western Cape Government is being lauded for the launch of its Roads4U mobile application – a first of its kind in South Africa.
MEC for the Department of Infrastructure, Tertius Simmers, launched the mobile app.
This ground-breaking digital tool is the first smartphone application of its kind to be released by any provincial government in South Africa.
“The Roads4U app marks a significant shift toward agile, citizen-centric service delivery by enabling the public to report road defects directly into the Department’s maintenance system. By leveraging automated GPS pinning and real-time updates, the app ensures a more responsive and transparent approach to infrastructure management across the province,” Simmers said.
Users can quickly report issues such as potholes, damaged road surfaces, faulty traffic signals, faded road markings, and vegetation overgrowth directly from their smartphones. With automatic GPS pinning, photo uploads, and a built-in tracking system, the app allows road users to submit accurate information while also following the progress of repairs.
Downloading the mobile application, which is available for Apple and Android, can be used to report faults in an instant.
Why download Roads4U?
- Precision: The app automatically pins the exact GPS location of the issue.
- Detail: Add photos and descriptions directly from your phone to help repair teams.
- Smart routing: If you report a defect on a road belonging to SANRAL or the City of Cape Town, the app automatically forwards it to them and notifies you.
- Transparency: Receive a unique reference number to follow the progress of your report.
- Real-time updates: Get the latest information on road conditions across the Western Cape network.
Simmers said engineers have used these systems for years.
The Chairperson of the Select Committee on Public Infrastructure and Minister in the Presidency, Rikus Badenhorst, welcomed the launch of the Western Cape Government’s new Roads4U mobile application.
Badenhorst said the Roads4U app marks an important step forward in modernising infrastructure management and strengthening collaboration between government and residents.
“I would like to congratulate the Western Cape Department of Infrastructure and Minister Tertuis Simmers on the successful rollout of this innovative digital platform.
“Effective road infrastructure is a critical enabler of economic growth, job creation, and safe mobility. When roads function well, goods move efficiently to market, tourism flourishes, and commuters travel safely to work and school. Tools such as the Roads4U app demonstrate how technology can be used to strengthen accountability and accelerate service delivery,” Badenhorst said.
The portfolio committee said this initiative reflects the Western Cape Government’s continued commitment to innovation, responsive governance, and infrastructure excellence. By placing practical tools in the hands of citizens, the province is demonstrating how technology can strengthen public participation while improving service delivery outcomes.
“Across South Africa, we must increasingly embrace solutions that make infrastructure maintenance more efficient, transparent, and collaborative. The Roads4U app provides a practical example of how digital innovation can support better governance,” Badenhorst said.
