EASTERN CAPE – A protest in KuGompo in the Eastern Cape over the alleged coronation of an Igbo king turned violent on Monday, with vehicles torched and buildings damaged.
According to a statement issued by the Office of the Provincial Commissioner, police are currently attending to the scene following unrest that broke out during what was initially planned as a peaceful march.
Police spokesperson Brigadier Nobuntu Gantana said the protest was led by various traditional leaders opposing the reported coronation.
“Violence broke out when some participants moved away from the city hall, where a petition was being handed over,” said Gantana.
“Twelve vehicles have been damaged, several buildings have been torched and no injuries have been reported.”
Emergency services, including the fire brigade and the Public Order Policing Unit, remain on the scene.
The situation remains active, with authorities indicating that further updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
In a social media post, ActionSA said it marched alongside traditional leaders in opposition to what it described as an unlawful coronation of a “Nigerian King”.
“Our country’s sovereignty must be protected at all times. We cannot allow parallel authorities to take root in our country,” the party said, adding that the move undermines South Africa’s Constitution and recognised traditional leadership structures.
Unverified social media posts claimed the protest escalated into broader unrest, alleging that criminal elements took advantage of the situation. Some also questioned whether the march had been properly authorised and whether adequate policing measures were in place.
Authorities have not confirmed these claims.
The circumstances surrounding the alleged coronation, as well as the events that led to the escalation of violence, remain under investigation.
