Parents scramble for 2027 school placements as WCED deadline looms

Parents and guardians applying for 2027 school placements in the Western Cape are being urged to act quickly, with the application window already open and closing on 14 April.

The Western Cape Education Department (WCED) says early applications are critical to avoid last-minute pressure and placement delays.

Officials warn that late applications create ‘a huge headache’ and make it harder to place every child before the school year starts.

Who must apply now

Applications currently apply to learners entering:

–Grade R

–Grade one

–Grade eight

Parents applying for other grades will only be able to do so later in the year, from 3 August.

Why early applications matter

The WCED says early submissions help determine demand and identify where additional school capacity is needed.

“We don’t want to see a massive rush… on the final day and even worse, not getting an application in time,” said the WCED’s Bronagh Hammond.

Late surges, especially in January and February, have previously made planning difficult.

High-demand areas under pressure

Rapid population growth in parts of the province continues to strain the system.

Areas highlighted include:

–Khayelitsha

–Kraaifontein

–Gordon’s Bay and surrounding areas

Officials say infrastructure projects are ongoing, but in some areas, land shortages limit new school construction.

Documents parents must prepare

Parents are advised not to start the online application until all required documents are ready.

These include:

–Certified copy of the child’s ID

–Latest school report (where applicable)

–Road-to-health (immunisation) card for primary school

–Proof of address

If documents are missing, affidavits may be submitted temporarily.

Online system and support available

Applications must be completed online after registering as a parent or caregiver.

Support options include:

–A dedicated admissions helpline

–Step-by-step guides and videos on the WCED website

–Pop-up assistance centres at selected malls

Officials say these services are especially important for parents who are not computer literate.

School choice and placement realities

Parents can apply to multiple schools, but the department warns against only choosing high-demand schools.

“Please also look at schools in your area,” officials said.

Oversubscribed schools may receive thousands of applications for limited spaces, making placement highly competitive.

School governing bodies ultimately decide admissions based on factors such as:

–Capacity

–Proximity

–Sibling placement

–Academic or programme requirements (for specialised schools)

What happens if your child is not placed

Parents can request reasons from schools if applications are unsuccessful.

In many cases, schools cite oversubscription due to limited space.

However, the WCED says placements often change over time as parents accept or decline offers, opening up additional spots.

Key deadline to remember

Parents have until 14 April to submit applications.

The department’s message is clear: apply early, prepare documents properly, and include a mix of school choices to improve placement chances.
