The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has warned of severe weather across several provinces, including a Yellow Level 4 warning for thunderstorms with heavy downpours over the eastern parts of Limpopo and Mpumalanga.

Coastal areas between Alexander Bay and Plettenberg Bay are also under a Yellow Level 2 warning for damaging waves, which may lead to localised damage and difficult navigation at sea.

Impact-based warnings

  • Yellow Level 4 warning for severe thunderstorms across eastern Limpopo and Mpumalanga, bringing heavy downpours, damaging winds, hail and excessive lightning.
  • Expect localised flooding and damage to infrastructure and settlements in these areas.
  • Yellow Level 2 warning for severe thunderstorms over the south-west and central Limpopo, as well as the Highveld in Mpumalanga.
  • These storms may cause localised flooding and damage to infrastructure and settlements.
  • Yellow Level 2 warning for damaging waves between Alexander Bay and Plettenberg Bay during the morning. Coastal infrastructure may suffer localised damage, and sea navigation will be difficult.

In the SAWS’ colour-coded weather warning system, yellow indicates a moderate risk of impact that requires caution and awareness, while orange indicates that a higher-risk impact is expected, requiring increased attention and preparation.

SAWS uses the numbers to indicate the likelihood of weather-related impacts. Levels 2 and 6 are high, and Level 4 is low.
