After years of rebuilding the sport in the province, ten KwaZulu-Natal skaters will take to the ice at the Gauteng Inter-Provincial Championships this March.
Â
KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa (12 March 2026) – For a province rebuilding its figure skating scene, this moment feels pretty special.
When the Gauteng Inter-Provincial Figure Skating Championships takes place from 15 to 17 March 2025 at the Forrest Hill Ice Rink, skaters from across South Africa will gather to compete, learn and celebrate the sport. But for the South African Figure Skating Association in KwaZulu-Natal, the event carries extra meaning.
For the first time in six years, the province will send a full team of ten skaters to compete outside the province.
Not long ago, things looked very different. In 2022, KwaZulu-Natal had just one skater competing at an inter-provincial championship. By 2023, that number had grown to two. Now, the team travelling to Pretoria represents the biggest provincial squad in years and a clear sign that the rebuilding of figure skating in KZN is gaining momentum.
A big part of that progress has come through the 2025 development programme, which helped eight of the ten athletes transition from club skaters into competitive athletes.
Among those representing the province in the Stars of Tomorrow category are Alex Bothma from Amanzimtoti, Mzande Mduli from Pennington, and Letho Gwala from uMlazi. In the Competitive Solo Figure Skating section, KZN will also be well represented. Skaters competing in the Silver division include Cassidy Baker, Tanique Jansen, Amarah Peer, Isabella Reyneke and Mia Stannard, while Ester Horne and Zach Morgan will compete in the Gold division.
Behind every skater stepping onto the ice in Pretoria are hours of practice, early mornings at the rink, and parents cheering from the sidelines.
And this year, instead of travelling as individuals, KwaZulu-Natal arrives as a team ready to show just how much the sport has grown.
