“The first day of the tournament mainly focused on elite athletes, and five elite karateka from my dojo entered. The Maduna twin sisters, Karabo and Karabelo, paved the way for us on a very high note,” said sensei Thabo Molubi.

Serole Rangongo holds up his silver meda.

Karabo took to the stage and won the first gold medal for her kumite division. Karabelo followed suit and won a gold medal as well for her kumite division.

“Their wins motivated my other athletes even though the competition was tough. Our third was Katleho Maduna, who fought in the U21 kumite U60kg division. The division was tough, but Katleho pulled through. He managed to win a bronze medal respectively.

“Our rising superstar, Serole Rangongo, did not disappoint at all. He won a silver medal in his kumite division as well.”

“Lethabo Maloka fought like a warrior. His kumite division was tough and consisted of 16 athletes. He won a well-deserved bronze medal.

“I am extremely happy with the performance of my athletes in general. They have started the year on a high by winning two gold, two silver and two bronze medals.

“They have qualified to represent the Gauteng province at the upcoming senior and junior national championships that will take place at the end of February until March.

“Nothing makes me happy like seeing my athletes shine on the provincial and national stage. It simply shows that they are a force to be reckoned with.”
