Democratic Alliance announces new mayoral candidates for Western Cape elections

The Democratic Alliance on Monday announced its second batch of mayoral candidates for municipalities across the Western Cape, naming six party members who will contest leadership of their respective local governments in the upcoming local government elections.

The candidates, spanning municipalities from Cederberg in the north to Mossel Bay on the Garden Route, include:

  • Koos Steyn for Breede Valley
  • Yves Blaauw for Cederberg
  • Dirk Kotzé for Mossel Bay
  • Marius Koen for Saldanha Bay
  • Dr Jacques Du Toit for Swellendam
  • Roelof “Boffie” Strydom for the West Coast District

The announcement was made by DA Western Cape Leader Tertuis Simmers, who said the new slate builds on the momentum established by the party’s first round of candidate announcements.

“Today, the DA introduced the second group of Mayoral Candidates for municipalities across the Western Cape, who will carry our message of hope to residents in their respective municipalities,” Simmers said.

“Building on the momentum of our first announcement, this group of candidates is ready to roll up their sleeves and get to work.”

The six candidates represent a mix of DA-governed municipalities and councils where the party is seeking to unseat incumbent administrations.

Simmers framed the dual mandate as central to the party’s pitch to voters.

“In municipalities where we do not yet govern, these candidates offer residents a real chance to get the municipalities working,” he said.

“In municipalities where we do govern, these candidates will bolster and build on our proven record of service delivery.”

The DA, which governs the Western Cape provincial government and controls several of its municipalities, has pointed to a string of clean audit outcomes and governance awards as evidence of its administrative competence.

Simmers reiterated that positioning on Monday, describing the party as “the only party capable of creating jobs, providing basic services, rooting out corruption and safeguarding communities.”

All six candidates have received formal endorsement from the party, with Simmers confirming they are “ready to connect with residents and deliver our offer of hope.”
