The Northern Cape Open Singles competition concluded with familiar faces emerging victorious in both the men’s and women’s bowling categories.
The sectional play for the men was hosted at the Sol Plaatje West End Bowls Club, while the women’s sectional matches were held at the Beaconsfield Park Bowling Green Club. The semifinals and finals for both divisions were played at Beaconsfield Park on Sunday 22 March, delivering exciting matches for the spectators.
Women’s final ‘closely contested affair’
The women’s singles saw the Conroy women dominate the competition, with three of their players topping their sections and advancing to the semifinals. The first semifinal featured Marietjie van der Bergh against Liezel Kock, and it was Van der Bergh who emerged victorious, securing her place in the final.
The second semifinal saw Alet van Heerden play against Adi Koekemoer. Koekemoer, using the advantage of playing on home ground, triumphed in the match, setting up a highly anticipated final against defending champion Van der Bergh.
The final was a closely contested affair, keeping spectators on the edge of their seats. However, Van der Bergh’s experience proved to be the deciding factor as she clinched the title once again, successfully defending her Northern Cape Bowls (NCB) Women’s Singles Championship.
Despite the loss, Koekemoer’s strong performance throughout the competition was commendable, and she can be proud of her efforts.
In the third place play-off, Liezel Kock narrowly defeated Alet van Heerden to secure third place.
