CONTRALESA demands action after Nigerian King allegedly crowned in Eastern Cape – Channel Africa

South Africa’s (SA) Congress of Traditional Leaders (CONTRALESA) has called on government to act after reports that a Nigerian man was allegedly crowned king in East London.

CONTRALESA President Kgosi Mathupa Mokoena said the coronation is an insult to local kings and violates the country’s Constitution.

“No person can be a king without traditional leaders under them,” Mokoena said. “If they have kingship in their family, let them be recognised in their own country, not here in SA. This group is undermining our Constitution and the laws of our country. Government must stop this nonsense and take this group to task.”

The organisation’s statement comes amid growing concern about foreign nationals establishing traditional titles in SA, which CONTRALESA says threatens the authority of recognised local leadership structures.
