“The Wild Coast is more than a destination. It is the soul of the Eastern Cape, where ancient cultural heritage and untamed natural beauty meet,” says Vuyani Dayimani, CEO of the Eastern Cape Parks and Tourism Agency.
He adds that strengthened community partnerships and safety measures aim to ensure visitors feel welcome and protected, while tourism supports local communities and preserves the coastline.
Here are six must-do experiences on the Wild Coast.
1. Explore Mkambati Nature Reserve
Mkambati Nature Reserve offers rocky shores, empty beaches and free-roaming wildlife in northern Pondoland.
The highlight is Mkhambathi Falls, one of the few waterfalls in the world that plunge directly into the ocean. Cathedral Rock rising from the sea adds to the drama. Hikes here feel cinematic and remote.
2. Watch Cape vultures over Msikaba Gorge
Msikaba Gorge delivers scale and solitude. Endangered Cape vultures soar above steep cliffs and forested ravines.
Trails cross rolling grasslands to panoramic viewpoints over the gorge. The setting suits travellers who value big landscapes and minimal crowds.
3. Stand at Waterfall Bluff
Near Lusikisiki, Waterfall Bluff is one of the few waterfalls in the world that drop straight into the sea.
The water plunges nearly 100 metres into the Indian Ocean. The hike requires effort. The reward is a rare meeting point of land and ocean.
4. Visit Magwa Falls
Just inland from Lusikisiki, Magwa Falls drops 144 metres into a forested canyon.
The drive passes through tea plantations before reaching a canyon-edge viewpoint. The scale draws comparisons to Victoria Falls, without the crowds.
5. Stay in Port St Johns and explore the Umngazi River
Port St Johns blends dramatic cliffs with strong Pondo heritage.
Visit Second Beach. Browse local markets. Hike to viewpoints above the river mouth.

6. Witness the Sardine Run
Each winter, millions of sardines migrate along the Wild Coast. Dolphins, sharks, whales and diving gannets follow.
