The National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD) reported on the weekly measles surveillance.
According to the WHO, measles infects the respiratory tract and then spreads throughout the body. Symptoms include a high fever, cough, runny nose and a rash all over the body.
A measles outbreak hit North West, Gauteng, Limpopo and Mpumalanga in 2022.
NICD released the data from the week, where the Western Cape recorded over 50 cases.
“Measles Surveillance Data available (accessed 12 February 2026) from 29 December 2025 to 08 February 2026 (ISO Weeks 1-6) indicated that 307 laboratory-confirmed measles cases were reported nationally. The Western Cape reported the highest number of new cases (56), followed by KwaZulu-Natal (13), Mpumalanga (10), Free State (5), Gauteng (4), Northern Cape (2), Limpopo (2), and North West (2).”
Additionally, Rubella has decreased across the country.
“Rubella Surveillance A total of 32 laboratory-confirmed rubella cases were reported in South Africa from data available (accessed 12 February 2026) from 29 December 2025 to 08 February 2026 (ISO Weeks 1–6) through fever-rash surveillance. Rubella cases have decreased nationally in comparison to the same period in 2025.”
