Racing enthusiasts brought energy and excitement to Kempton Park BMX Club when they gathered for the first Gauteng BMX Provincial and Club Race of the year on February 15.
The event was especially memorable for several development riders from Soshanguve, who showcased their skills and talent on the track.
Although the weather threatened rain, conditions ultimately worked in the riders’ favour, remaining dry and pleasantly cool.

For many, getting back into race mode proved challenging, as it had been months since their last competition. Some riders were taking to the track for the first time this year.
The day began with the Club Race.
While some riders faced a tricky start in their initial motos, others cruised to smooth victories. Cradle BMX rider Reagan Mellon, returning after a three-month break, dominated his races, finishing first in all his motos.
“It feels good to be back racing. My last race was at the SA Champs last year, and I’ve been on holiday since then, not riding at all. It’s great to see everyone again and get back on the bike, slowly regaining my speed and skills.
“Many of my opponents were new today. Courage, my friend, came second, but mostly I was racing him. Winning felt easy, but it’s nice to be back,” Mellon said.
As expected in BMX racing, falls and minor injuries occurred, particularly among the younger riders.

However, they quickly got back on their bikes and completed their races. The Club Race was highly competitive, with riders pushing hard to cross the finish line first.
After a short break, the riders returned for the Gauteng Provincial Race. This race offered new competitors a chance to make their mark, and participants were determined to perform their best in both events.
With several new faces on the track, some experienced riders found the competition tougher. Nevertheless, all competitors pushed and pedalled hard until the very last race.

Kempton Park BMX Club rider Gianna Edgcumbe claimed first place in her category. The race, however, was not without challenges, as a new opponent provided strong competition.“The race was good, but it was challenging because another girl was as fast as I am.

“Between races, she would finish first in one moto, and I would finish first in another, so I wasn’t sure who would win overall. In the end, I finished first, and I am very happy and proud of myself,” Edgcumbe said.
