Tenshinkan karate targets East Gauteng glory after strong regional showing | Heidelberg Nigel Heraut

Tenshinkan Karate students preparing for the East Gauteng Championships on February 28 at the Brakpan Indoor Sports Centre are entering the competition with renewed confidence after an impressive performance at their last regional outing.

The team heads into the upcoming championship on the back of multiple podium finishes at the Tenshinkan Vaal Championships on January 31. Here, they earned first, second, and third place honours across kata, kumite, and weapons (wooden, non-bladed) divisions, highlighting the club’s steady progress and commitment to excellence.

Sensei Leon Gagiano said the recent results have strengthened the team’s confidence and determination ahead of the next competition.

“I am proud of each student who represented the dojo at the previous championship.

“They demonstrated strong technique, fighting spirit, and respect throughout the event. Many of them competed against experienced opponents, yet they remained disciplined, focused, and composed under pressure. These achievements are the result of consistent training, perseverance, and the unwavering support of their families,” he said.

Gagiano added that the team’s preparation has been intense as they look ahead to the next challenge.

“We have been working hard to refine our techniques, improve our focus, and build confidence in every student.
“What I see in training gives me great belief in this team. They are determined, committed, and hungry to succeed. If they continue to apply what they have learned and perform at their best, I strongly believe they have what it takes to win at the upcoming championship. For us, success is not only measured in medals but also in growth, character, and unity,” he said.
