President Cyril Ramaphosa has vowed that the national government will step in and assist flood-stricken Mpumalanga, as it recovers from inclement weather.
On Monday, Ramaphosa made his way to the province to conduct oversight visits in the worst-affected areas.
He began in Mjejane village, where an over-flooded stream has damaged houses in the community.
Ramaphosa arrived to loud cheers from stranded community members, who are hoping his visit will lessen plight.
Ramaphosa has promised an “all-hands-on-deck” approach to recent weather-related disasters in Mpumalanga, Limpopo and KwaZulu-Natal.
He said engagements are currently underway with the national finance ministry, following the disaster classification of the affected areas
“Our minister of finance is in Devos, but we’re also briefing him, and we’re going to see what intervention the government is able to make.”
He said while teams have responded swiftly, there is still a greater need for intervention.
“As government response has been effective, obviously, we need to do more to deal with disasters that continue to befall us.”
Ramaphosa is set to visit two more affected communities in the province.
