Asher ‘Ash’ Wilson, may only be in Grade 6, but his achievements on the water are anything but small.
The 11-year-old, who lives near Dabulamanzi Canoe Club, has quickly become one of the most promising young paddlers in the region, showing grit, talent, and a maturity well beyond his years.
Ash first climbed into a canoe in November 2021, at the tender age of six. What began as a playful introduction to the sport soon turned into a passion. By 2022, he was already competing in his first GCU Sprint, holding his own against older and more experienced competitors. Since then, he has consistently placed in the top three across various age groups, excelling in both sprint and marathon events.

The past year marked an exciting new chapter in Ash’s journey as he ventured into river racing for the first time. In 2025, he took on challenging events, such as the Tugela 20s, the Liebenbergsvlei, and the Little Fish, partnering with seasoned paddlers and training closely with his coach, Gunther Grune.

One of his standout performances was when he and Grune tackled a demanding two-day river race. On the Saturday, the duo launched just below the Vaal Dam Wall at the Rapids Paradise venue, paddling 32km to the Albatross Ski Boat Club in Three Rivers. With no water release from the dam, the conditions were tough, making for a long and physically testing slog, punctuated by a handful of thrilling rapids and winding turns. They crossed the finish line in a commendable time of 03:33:00 securing 18th place in the K2 category.

The following day proved no less demanding. Starting at Eden Manor, below the Barrage, they covered a further 37km to Umfula Lodge, pushing through fatigue and the relentless pull of the river. For Ash, the experience was both challenging and rewarding, offering valuable lessons in endurance, teamwork, and mental strength.
With his natural talent, strong work ethic, and unwavering support from his coach and family, Ash’s future in canoeing looks bright. For now, this pint-sized paddler is content to keep training, competing, and enjoying every moment on the water, proving that big dreams can start at any age.
