During an engagement session organized by the Free State Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development at the Harry Gwala Multi-Purpose Hall in Sasolburg on February 5, MEC Elzabe Rockman outlined the province’s foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) response plan to Farmer’s Weekly’s Gary Wium.

Rockman confirmed that more than 114,900 cattle have already been vaccinated, with additional doses secured and priority areas identified to prevent further spread. Key elements of the Free State’s Foot and Mouth Plan include:
*Strict controls on animal movements, including quarantine measures and limited transport within and across provincial borders;
*Targeted vaccination in risk and buffer areas as soon as vaccines become available;
*Improved biosecurity at auctions, with a shift to online auctions where possible;
*Active surveillance and rapid response, including immediate testing of suspected cases;
