Heatwave and thunderstorms to hit as SAWS issues fire danger warning

Isolated showers and thundershowers are expected to affect parts of KwaZulu-Natal, the north-east of the Eastern Cape, south-west Limpopo, the northern parts of North West and much of the Northern Cape, where rainfall will be scattered in the north.

The South African Weather Service (Saws) said the mixed conditions are being driven by pressure systems influencing both the eastern and western regions of the country.

“The pattern is due to a ridging high pressure in the east with a surface trough over the western parts of the country,” said weather forecaster Rejoyce Manana Mohlamme.

This combination is resulting in a blend of storm activity and intense heat across several provinces.

In the Northern Cape, residents can expect generally warm to hot weather, with isolated to scattered showers and thundershowers forecast.

The Western Cape is also set for warm to hot conditions accompanied by isolated showers and thundershowers, particularly towards Thursday and Friday. Meanwhile, the Eastern Cape will see cooler to mild temperatures, with isolated showers and thundershowers predicted.

Mohlamme warned that “very hot to extremely hot and uncomfortable conditions are expected over the western parts of Namakwa, West Coast, and the City of Cape Town districts as well as western parts of the Cape Winelands on Sunday and Monday.”

The heat is also expected to extend to the Central Karoo, the interior of the Garden Route and the Overberg, as well as southern parts of Namakwa on Sunday.

An extremely high Fire Danger Index warning has also been issued for the western parts of the Northern Cape and areas of the Western Cape, raising concerns about the risk of veld fires under the prevailing hot and dry conditions.
