Gauteng Department of Transport moves to tackle scholar transport crisis

Following recent nationwide outrage over scholar transport accidents, Gauteng’s Roads and Transport Department will hold a meeting on Sunday to address challenges facing the sector.

MEC Kedibone Diale-Tlabela says today’s discussions, to be held at Johannesburg City Hall, will tackle multiple issues, including compliance, traffic laws and regulations, and licensing backlogs.

Department spokesperson Lesiba Mpya says the transport stakeholder engagements are also aimed at promoting safety and reliability, while enhancing the quality of scholar transport services in Gauteng.

“Indeed, we are removing dangerous vehicles from our roads to protect lives. Compliance with the law is not optional. It’s not negotiable. And those who endanger road users through negligence, corruption, or criminal behaviour will be met with decisive action and the might of the law.”
